SailLab is a new initiative that brings the sport of sailing into the classroom through a custom ‘built-by-teachers’ STEM education program.

SailLab recognises that STEM qualifications and skills are not just desirable but essential for our nation's productivity, innovation and overall success. By integrating science, technology, engineering and mathematics into our learning frameworks, we can equip our future leaders with the tools they need to thrive in an ever-evolving job market and global landscape.

Students will embark on a number of modules that link directly with the Australian Curriculum. Each module is made up of in-classroom learning experiences, delivered by teachers.

There will be a set of 6 modules designed for primary students in Years 4-6, and a separate set of 10 modules aimed at lower secondary students (Years 7-10). Modules will range from explaining the physics of sailing and foiling, to exploring atmospheric science and oceanography. Every aspect of this program is designed to spark curiosity and foster critical thinking. In the realm of technology, students will harness the power of remote-controlled sailing and explore material science – particularly in the context of exciting new developments of the AC boats.

What sets the Australian Sailing STEM Program apart is its inclusivity and accessibility. Regardless of geographic location or background, students of all abilities will have the opportunity to participate. We have purposely selected schools with different structures and curriculum demands. From Private to Public, Catholic to Independent, as well as Education Support Centres, this program can be applied to all.

Further, the program is not reliant on water access, making it cost-effective and scalable across all schools. In addition to classroom experiences, each school will be offered an optional one-day sailing experience at their local club.

The SailLAB Experience Day takes on a completely different focus to a typical school sailing program – the focus is not entirely on teaching the fundamental skills of sailing a boat, which isn’t possible to achieve in a day. Instead, the focus is on demonstrating the key concepts of what makes a sail boat move through the water, the key forces at play, transfer of energy, materials for different purposes and the identification and demonstration of pulley systems.
