Primary Module 4: Build a Sailboat

Return to Primary Resources

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the main parts of a sailboat and describe what each part does.
  • Describe the properties of materials used in boat construction and explain why they are chosen.
  • Design and build a model sailboat using everyday materials that can move using wind power.
  • Test and race their sailboats, recording results and reflecting on how design and materials affect performance.

Lesson Description

This module is broken into five lessons:

Lesson 1 - Parts of a Sailboat and How They Work:
Students learn how the different parts of a sailboat work together to help it float, catch the wind, and move through water.

Lesson 2 - Materials and Sailboat Design:
Students explore the properties of materials used in boats and plan their own sailboat design using suitable materials for strength and buoyancy.

Lesson 3 - Building, Testing and Modifying Mini Sailboats:
Students build and test mini sailboats using wind power, collect data on performance, and make design improvements based on results.

Lesson 4 - Sailboat Racing, Reflection and Data Analysis:
Students race their sailboats, record and compare results, and reflect on how design choices affect speed, stability, and success.
