Primary Module 1: Wind Awareness

Return to Primary Resources

Learning Objectives

  • Understand what wind is and explain how it is formed through differences in air pressure and temperature.
  • Measure wind speed and direction accurately, and identify reliable sources for wind forecasts and meteorological data.
  • Construct and test a simple anemometer to record and analyse wind speed, interpreting their results to identify trends or variations around the school.
  • Use a digital anemometerto record knots, and a wind indicator to record wind direction using compass bearings.

Lesson Description

This module is broken into five lessons:

Lesson 1 - What is Wind?:
Understanding what wind is, how it forms and recognising its effects.

Lesson 2 - Mini Meteorologists:
Learning how wind speed and direction are measured and exploring where wind data comes from.

Note: iPads or computers required to access the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).

Lesson 3 - Build Your Own Anemometer and Indoor Testing:
Designing, building and testing a simple anemometer to measure wind speed.

Lesson 4 - Outdoor Investigation and Data Analysis:
Testing student-built anemometers outdoors; collecting and analysing wind data using digital tools.

Note: Windy day required!

Lesson 5 - Build Your Own Wind Indicator and Compass:
Creating additional tools to observe wind direction orientation.
