Primary Module 5: Radio Control Sailing

Return to Primary Resources

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the main parts of a remote-control (RC) yacht and describe how each part functions (including receiver and transmitter).
  • Explain how wind creates forces that move a sailboat and how sail trim, direction, and points of sail affect speed and control.
  • Operate an RC yacht, practising sail trim and rudder control to navigate effectively in different wind conditions.
  • Work collaboratively to test and refine sailing techniques using RC boats both in the classroom and on the water.

Lesson Description

This module is broken into four lessons:

Lesson 1 - Introduction to RC Yachts and Sailing Principles:

  • Review key forces: gravity, buoyancy, thrust, drag (on full, foils and sail).
  • Identify main parts of a sailboat and RC yacht.
  • Demonstrate controls, remote signals, and basic sailing concepts such as sail trim, direction and points of sail.

Lesson 2 - Getting to Know RC Boats:

  • Use fans indoors to practise operating RC boats.
  • Adjust sails for different wind angles and explore points of sail.
  • Rotate through quick activity stations or test in a small outdoor water area (water tubs/paddling pools need to be deep enough for yacht keels).

Lesson 3 - Sailing at a Local Venue (Local/school swimming pool or other local waterbody):

  • Apply skills at a larger site such as a pool, lake, or yacht club.
  • Navigate simple courses (with two markers) and observe how wind and sail trim affect control and speed.
  • Complete short fun races in teams, and record results using the “low-point scoring system”.

Lesson 4 - Reflection and Evaluation:

  • Discuss how forces, trim, and points of sail interact.
  • Record results, share observations, and suggest improvements
