Lesson Description
This module is broken into four lessons:
Lesson 1 - Introduction to the America's Cup:
- Discuss what students know about the America’s Cup and the significance of the winged keel.
- Explore how yacht designs have evolved and why design matters.
- Consider the environmental impacts of the most recent America’s Cup.
- Research the history and key technological developments of the America’s Cup (using provided website and student activity sheet).
Lesson 2 - Design an America's Cup Yacht:
- Work in teams to design a yacht for a make-believe 38th America’s Cup in Fremantle.
- Apply learning from previous modules toaddress speed, stability, cost and environmental impact.
- Develop concept sketches, materials plans, group roles and a project timeline.
Lesson 3 and 4 - Build the AC75 Model:
- Build a model of the AC75 using recycled materials.
- Link material choices and design features to yacht performance.
- Test and refine models based on results.
Lesson 4 - Presentaion and Reflection:
- Present designs through a video or live presentation.
- Explain and justify design choices and performance factors.
- Reflect on what could be improved in the design, and how changes might enhance performance and innovation.
