Learning Objectives

  • Identify and describe key terms such as Challenger and Defender, and explain how the America’s Cup competition is organised.
  • Explain how yacht design and technology have changed over time, and describe how these developments influence performance, and racing outcomes.
  • Investigate the achievements of Australian sailors Jimmy Spithill and Glenn Ashby, and recognise how teamwork, leadership, and innovation contribute to success in elite sport.
  • Apply their understanding of yacht design principles to create and communicate an innovative America’s Cup yacht design that reflects performance, function, and Australian team identity.

Lesson Description

This module is broken into four lessons:

Lesson 1 - Introduction to the America's Cup:

  • Discuss what students know about the America’s Cup and the significance of the winged keel. 
  • Explore how yacht designs have evolved and why design matters. 
  • Consider the environmental impacts of the most recent America’s Cup. 
  • Research the history and key technological developments of the America’s Cup (using provided website and student activity sheet).

Lesson 2 - Design an America's Cup Yacht:

  • Work in teams to design a yacht for a make-believe 38th America’s Cup in Fremantle. 
  • Apply learning from previous modules toaddress speed, stability, cost and environmental impact. 
  • Develop concept sketches, materials plans, group roles and a project timeline.

Lesson 3 and 4 - Build the AC75 Model:

  • Build a model of the AC75 using recycled materials. 
  • Link material choices and design features to yacht performance. 
  • Test and refine models based on results.

Lesson 4 - Presentaion and Reflection:

  • Present designs through a video or live presentation.
  • Explain and justify design choices and performance factors.
  • Reflect on what could be improved in the design, and how changes might enhance performance and innovation.
