Emergency Steering

There are many tiller and wheel systems needing different emergency steering methods.

Under the Special Regulations emergency steering must be capable of being fitted quickly to the rudder stock, and crew must be aware of the as alternative methods on how to use it. A boat must be able to demonstrate the setup of their boat system at the time of auditing.

An emergency steering system for a single wheel or tiller could comprise of the following:
- A market/industry constructed tiller re manufactured specifically for the boat
- A spinnaker pole and/floorboard constructions type
- A drogue
- Other methods

For a double wheel steering system, that is a single rudder with 2 separate steering quadrants, the same above applies, the other wheel can also be used as for steering. However, if this malfunction, an emergency tiler will still need to be carried

If a twin wheel and double rudder, then an emergency steering system shall still be carried
If one of the wheel malfunctions and if the other wheel is operational, then that operating wheel will take place of the emergency steering back up.

However, due to the risk of an event where both wheels malfunction, an emergency steering system must be carried. For example, if the boom comes across and knocks out both wheels, the boat still has 2 rudders and they can use their emergency tiller to steer.

If using a drogue, the boat must demonstrate how it is set up and attached to the boat to maintain steerage. Some useful tips:
- Attachment to the boat- best midships for great center of effort in maneuvering the boat
- Swivel shackle set up at various of attachment points from drogue to boat. I.e. swivel shackle between drogue and catena, swivel shackle between catena (chain) and steering lines
- Swivel shackles allow for stopping the twisting of a drogue and its lines to enable efficient function of the system for boat steerage and maneuverability.
- Centre of effort - secondary winches midships are more effective in moving boat than back of boat which can limit maneuverability.
- Suggested steering lines include anchor warp which will stretch under load
- Catena to weigh down the drouge and also for stretch and recoil of load

If using spinnaker pole and floorboard, the floorboard should be long and narrow enough and weighed down with a chain to make sure remains vertical. The inboard end of the pole may need some form of amplifying the force for steerage. This might be the use of sheets/ropes leading to winches.
