Class World Championships hosted in Australia

To better support World Sailing Classes and Clubs wanting to host World and Continental Championships, Australian Sailing has updated the Hosting Class World and Continental Championships in Australia Policy which outlines the support we can provide and the role AS plays in helping clubs and classes comply with World Sailing regulations.

  1. Bidding to Secure an Event - Notification of Event Bid 

World Sailing Classes and Clubs bidding to host a World Championships in Australia are required to inform Australian Sailing of the bid details via the online form on the AS website >>CLICK HERE

  2. World Sailing Compliance 

In accordance with World Sailing Regulation 12 and Policy D3, an International or Recognised Class is required to obtain approval from Australian Sailing to host a World or Continental Championship in Australia. 

The dates for all world and continental championships must be sent to World Sailing no later than 1 August for the following year (including all championship titles to be awarded at the event). 

Requirements for Approval: 

The Organising Authority shall be appointed in accordance with RRS 89.1. 

The host Sailing Club shall be affiliated with Australian Sailing.  

The National Class Association shall have and maintain current affiliation to Australian Sailing. 

The event meets the requirements of the World Sailing Regulations and Policies. 

Application for Approval:

The National/State Class Association, host club or event organiser should complete the online form to apply for approval >>CLICK HERE

Providing the following details:

  • The event which [is being bid for/has been awarded] to the class association/host club/event organiser.
  • The organisation which is to be the Organising Authority in accordance with RRS 89.1;
  • The [proposed/confirmed] dates of the Championship.
  • The [proposed/confirmed] venue of the Championship.
  • The [proposed/confirmed] members of the International Jury (if known at that stage).
  • The [proposed/confirmed] Principal Race Officer of the Championship (if known at that stage).
  • The [proposed/confirmed] International Measurer to chair the Technical Committee of the Championship (if known at that stage).

Withdrawal of Approval:

Australian Sailing may choose to withdraw their approval of the championship should the host Club and/or national Class Association not maintain their affiliation throughout the entire period between approval and event staging. Australian Sailing may choose to withdraw their approval of the championship should the host Club and/or national Class Association not comply with the applicable World Sailing regulations and policies.

Australian Sailing Support: 

  • Co-ordinate the Australian Sailing Calendar. 
  • Provide written support to the Class Association, host Club or event organiser in the bidding process. 
  • Assist with information, guidance and support regarding funding support for bidding and hosting international events. 
  • Assist Class Associations, host Clubs and event organisers once the event is awarded. 
  • Promote the event through publishing details on the Australian Sailing Event Calendar, including a link to the event website. 
  • Assist in coordinating members available for International Juries if required, particularly international judges/umpires coming to Australia for other events. 
  • Assist with the appointment of a Principal Race Officer if required. 
  • Assist where necessary with the preparation of World Sailing standard Documents and State/Territory regulations.
