Advice on Grab Bag stowage

Published Tue 02 Apr 2024

Where a grab bag should be stowed requires thought and communication. The best spot will vary from boat to boat, but no matter the boat, crew need to be able to grab it in an emergency.

Special Regulation 4.20.2 for Grab Bag Recommended Contents states:
The grab bag should be stored in an easily accessible, protected location and crew should be briefed on the location and contents of the grab bag. The following contents should be considered for inclusion and should be appropriately packed and waterproofed.

Practically this is different for each yacht. Consideration should be given to how easy it could be found in an emergency. The time available to find the grab bags will vary substantially. Prior to heading out take the time to assign a specific crew member the responsibility to actually get each bag this will save confusion and delays when they are needed.

The ideal location may be near the companion way hatch so it can be collected quickly from either above or below deck. An alternative location is near the navigator’s station as there is often a member of the crew in this seat. Wherever you choose to locate the bags make sure the crew knows where to go to pick them up.
