International Race Officials’ New Applications

Published Tue 24 Mar 2020

World Sailing has recently issued advice on the national authority’s quality control role when considering endorsements to International Race Officials’ new applications.

The advice from World Sailing articulates the expectation that the national authority, in our case Australian Sailing, will apply some discretion and judgement when giving endorsement to an application.

Australia Sailing is looking to endorse people who in addition to meeting World Sailing’s minimum criteria will show:

  • A strong history of commitment to domestic events and training activities
  • Engagement with the broader needs of the sailing community
  • Sublime technical skills
  • Strong leadership traits
  • Exemplary behavioural and interpersonal skills

Ultimately, we want to be confident that the applicant’s future on the world stage will meet World Sailing’s expectations and uphold Australia’s excellent reputation.

Before applying with World Sailing please ensure your state or territory’s Race Officials Committee is aware of your intent to apply and allow time for the Australian Sailing office to make enquiries regarding your background and suitability for appointment. Australian Sailing looks forward to honouring the role that World Sailing has asked it to play and feedback will be provided to all applicants explaining our decision on how we endorse their application.

World Sailing have also advised that all references are to be obtained by the national official sending the request to the suitable referee prior to an event using their online Survey Monkey platform. This shall not influence any PDF references previously collected which shall remain able to be uploaded to any First-Time application.

To help with this process, two guideline manuals have been produced, a manual for all new applicants who wish to collecting references, instructing them on how to provide their referee with the link to complete the reference, and a manual for referees, with a step-by-step guide on how they complete the reference online.

Both manuals have been placed on the World Sailing website under each Sub Committees ‘Become a International Judge/Measurer etc’ section. In this section you shall also find the Reference Form Guidelines to provides the technical understanding of the content to be included within the form.

Australian officials who have begun collecting references or whom are ready to apply in the 2020 process should refer the manual.
