LED lighting interference with VHF reception

Published Wed 25 May 2022

There is potential for light-emitting diode lighting on boats to compromise reception on VHF frequencies.

AMSA has published information on research done by the United Sates Coast Guard around LED lighting and the effect it can have on reception on VHF radios and AIS.

LED lights are commonly used for navigation lighting due to their energy saving capability and longevity in a marine environment.  Unfortunately, however when mounted close to the VHF antenna there is suggested evidence that reception could be compromised.

For information on testing for LED interference and give feedback to AMSA if this may have happened to you, please go to the article on their website.
