Officiating in Radio Sailing

Published Mon 20 Apr 2026

Radio sailing is a rapidly growing discipline of sailing, offering participants a short, high-octane version of the sport with low barriers to entry, great social opportunities, and intense competition.

Due to recent rapid growth, the Australian Radio Yachting Association (ARYA) is keen to expand the number of officials in the discipline, particularly judges and umpires.

With short races and many boats packed into smaller areas, there are often many more incidents than you would expect in full-size racing. This means that judges and umpires can expect more action and more opportunities to develop their skills. No more sitting around all day waiting for a protest to come in!

ARYA hosts six National level events each year, each of which naturally requires a protest committee. In addition, there are a number of significant international events coming to Australia in the next couple of years, including:

  • International One Meter Australian Championship, Sunshine Coast, 19-22 August 2026

  • International One Meter Oceania Continental Championships, Gold Coast, 5-11 September 2027

There are also bids in progress for the 2029 DragonForce 65 Global Championship and Marblehead and Ten Rater World Championship, all in 2029.

These events will require International Juries or International Umpires, and so present an excellent opportunity for judges and umpires to upskill.
