On the rules with Katy Jones

Published Thu 02 Mar 2023

Katy Jones has sailed at many international events and has coached for many years. Katy shares her key tips on the rules.

Katy’s first tip for the race course is “be confident".

"Knowing the key and frequently used rules such as Part 2 of the RRS “When Boats Meet” will empower you to hold your own on the race course. Just because someone shouts loudly doesn’t mean they are talking the truth and too often quiet sailors are pressured into unnecessary penalty turns."

The second tip for sailors, specifically those fortunate enough to have umpires on the course, is to speak with them.

"Chat to them post-race and learn. Although some can look scary, they’re mostly harmless and have so many wise words particularly after they’ve blown a whistle and waved a flag at you."
