Secondary Module 9-10: The 'Australia's Cup' Design Challenge

Learning Description
  • Work in defined team roles (Manager, Meteorologist, Coach, Yacht Designer/Builder) to plan a multi-lesson project, set timelines, and manage tasks against design rules and deliverables.
  • Research and justify design decisions (hull/rig/controls) within the challenge rules; produce concept views (handdrawn or Tinkercad) and document choices for speed, stability and control.
  • Develop and deliver a clear presentation that addresses the required sections in order; apply peer-assessment criteria fairly and use feedback to refine work.
  • Prepare a final submission to SailLAB (PowerPoint) that meets format and entry requirements.


Lesson Description

This module is broken into eight lessons :

Lesson 1 - Launch, roles, timeline:
Students will be introduced to the ‘Australia’s Cup’ fictional challenge provided. Roles (Manager, Meteorologist, Coach, Yacht Designer/Builder) will be defined and a timeline for presentation will be agreed as a class. Managers will begin team planning.

Lesson 2 - Rules, success criteria, slide order:
Students will be introduced to the challenge rules and teams can begin to break out into specialised roles to begin their research.

Lesson 3 - Research and concept views:
Students will continue their specific role’s research and may begin to build/ collate required information.

Lesson 4, 5, 6, 7 - Develop designs, rehearsal & slides:
Students continue to develop design, collate information, physically build whatever is required and ensure presentation is ready by deadline. Students are encouraged to complete a rehearsal and must submit require documentation to the teacher prior to presentation.

Lesson 8 - Present, peer-assess, submit':
Students will deliver their presentation to the class. Peers will mark using the criteria provided and marks will be collated by the teacher. A winner will be identified and their presentation will be submitted to SailLab to compete against winners from other schools.

Please note Lesson times are a pacing guide. You can adjust the pace depending on your school's timetable/students' abilities.
